"Our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee."
You've heard that quote - very famous. No, it's not from the Bible. Augustine, said it in his Confessions. But it is a sentiment that we all have run into - frequently. Simply this, that there is nothing in this world that satisfies completely, at least for very long. Soon we have to go looking for something else. George Herbert addressed this powerfully in the following poem.....
THE PULLEY
When God at first made man,
Having a glasse of blessings standing by;
Let us (said he) poure on him all we can :
Let the worlds riches, which dispersed lie,
Contract into a span.
So strength first made a way ;
Then beautie flow’d, then wisdome, honour, pleasure :
When almost all was out, God made a stay,
Perceiving that alone, of all his treasure,
Rest in the bottome lay.
For if I should (said he)
Bestow this jewell also on my creature,
He would adore my gifts in stead of me,
And rest in Nature, not the God of Nature :
So both should losers be.
Yet let him keep the rest,
But keep them with repining restlesnesse :
Let him be rich and wearie, that at least,
If goodnesse leade him not, yet wearinesse
May tosse him to my breast.
Do you get it? God wants relationship. And He has stacked the deck in His favor to win us over. This world has a governor on it. It can only tintillate so much. God, on the other hand, satisfies fully. Asaph said it best in Psalm 73.....
Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:25-26
