Why we Worship

PSALM 47

Clap your hands, all peoples!
  Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
  a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
  and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
  the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout,
  the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
  Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
  sing praises with a psalm!

Why Sing?

God reigns over the nations;
  God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
  as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
  he is highly exalted!

Why Scripture?

Fortune cookies play at significance, but ultimately their advice is as fluffy as the cookie itself. George Herbert had a talent for maxims, and they have been largely lost. But their wisdom still shines, after all these years.

WISE GUYS - George Herbert

April 12, 2009

For a guy who died in his thirties, George Herbert left quite a body of writing. Known mostly for his poetry, his thoughts on being a pastor (The Country Parson) contribute wise counsel for what true ministry in the Spirit looks like.

Lesser known are his "Outlandish Proverbs" as they are called - over a thousand short sayings that need to find a new home in our culture - maybe tucked inside a more intelligent fortune cookie called a "wise cookie?"

Here are a few samples....

1.    Man proposeth; God disposeth.

8.    The house shows the owner.

20.  You cannot know wine by the barrel.

23.  Look not for musk in a dog's kennel.

49.  Love and a cough cannot be hid.

50.  A dwarf on a giant's shoulder sees further of the two.

53.  Better the feet slip than the tongue.

84.  He that would learn to pray, let him go to sea.

94.  I gave the mouse a hole, and she is becoming my heir.

141.  Love your neighbor, yet pull not down your hedge.

149.  Marry your son when you will, your daughter when you can.

665.  A holy habit cleanses not a foul soul.

Are you hooked? Ok, one more....

1024.  He that wipes the child's nose kisseth the mother's cheek.
