Commentary: | Now let us praise the guardian of the heavenly kingdom, the power of the Creator and the counsel of His mind, the works of the Father of glory: how He, the eternal Lord, originated every marvel.
He, the holy Creator, first created the heaven as a roof for the children of the earth, then the eternal Lord, guardian of the human race, the almighty Ruler, afterwards fashioned the world as a soil for men.”
Imagine that you had never heard a poem before. Imagine that you didn't know how to read or write. Welcome to the first poem in the English language. And amazingly, it is about the creation of the world.
Caedmon lived in the north of England during the sixth century and is credited as England’s first known poet.
Caedmon was employed at Whitby Abbey, a double monastery of monks and nuns, ruled by Hilda, a member of the Northumbrian royal family.
Caedmon’s own origins were humble. As a manual worker in the monastery, he followed a hard day’s work by sitting around the fire with his co-workers. During the evenings, there was singing and story-telling, popular entertainments to pass the long nights. Each person was expected to take his turn on the harp as it passed around the circle, and sing to entertain the others.
We are told that Caedmon would often leave the gathering before his turn on the harp came, to avoid the attentions of others. Caedmon’s surviving poem concerning ‘the creation of all things’ is supposed to have come to him in a dream. He supposedly went to sleep unable to sing and awoke with the beginnings of a poem in his head, having never before composed poetry or songs.
The first of many poems that Cademan was to write, it was said that ‘he could never compose any foolish or trivial poem, but only those which were concerned with devotion’. (Bede)
PRAYER BY CADEMAN FROM "DANIEL"
Let the beauty of the world and each work praise you, gracious Father. Let heaven and angels and the clear waters of heaven, which dwell in proper order, in glory, praise you.
And let all Creation, the heaven-bright stars which hold their course, the sun and the moon, each apart, praise you, Almighty, in their degree. And let the stars, dew and heavy showers praise you. And let the spirits praise you, Mighty God.
Let burning fire and bright summer praise you, Savior. Let night and day together, and each land, light and dark, hot and cold together, praise you, mighty Lord, in their degree.
And let frost and snow, winter-bitter and driving clouds in the air praise you, Lord Almighty. And let bright, momentary lightning praise you. Let all earth's ground, hills and plains and high mountains, salt seaways, rising waves and welling springs praise you, true Lord.
Let whales and flying birds praise you. Let rivers, moving waters, wild animals, and all cattle praise your name.
And let each of the children of men who love in you in their hearts, and Israel, your servants, praise you, Creator of lands, in their degree. And let the holy, excellent in heart, and each true soul and spirit love you, Lord of life, eternal Lord, who gives reward to all.
