Why we Worship

PSALM 47

Clap your hands, all peoples!
  Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
  a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
  and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
  the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout,
  the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
  Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
  sing praises with a psalm!

Why Sing?

God reigns over the nations;
  God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
  as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
  he is highly exalted!

Purpose: | Where do we look for inspiration? The world is quick to give us an ever changing and inspiring list. But only Jesus can deliver in matters of faith and perseverance and eternity. Jesus never disappoints.

Commentary: | Everybody loves heroes.  We all have them. And the writer of Hebrews knew that. So in chapter 11 he highlights the history of the faithful. Person after person is recalled, with glorious stories of how they trusted God and remained faithful. And it is very inspiring to be told of those who have set the mark before us.

You've seen those countdown shows where artificially they recall, say, television's top twenty blunders, or the top ten Super Bowls. In a way, Hebrews is an example of that. And in chapter 12 the countdown climaxes - we are we given the ultimate example, the supreme One - Jesus - as our hero to worship and to follow. So......

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, he author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the the throne of God.  Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.  Hebrews 12:2-3
