Why we Worship

PSALM 47

Clap your hands, all peoples!
  Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
  a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
  and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
  the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout,
  the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
  Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
  sing praises with a psalm!

Why Sing?

God reigns over the nations;
  God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
  as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
  he is highly exalted!

Purpose: | God, who can do anything, "limits" his effectiveness by having us be his hands and feet and voice. The task he calls us to is beyond us, but he promises his presence, and that makes all the difference.

Commentary: | From almost page one of the Bible, God enlists the aid of men and women to be his agents, to further his plans and purposes on earth.

Adam was immediately put to work naming the animals, Noah was asked to build an ark, Abraham was informed that if he would leave his country and go to another one that God would show him, that nations would descend from his body, and all the people of the earth would be blessed. But first he had to obey, by faith. And he did.

Moses had his burning bush experience, Joshua was enlisted to follow in his steps. Little Samuel heard God calling him in the middle of the night....you get the idea. In fact, the 11th chapter of Hebrews is a list of many who played key roles in the history of God's dealing with mankind.

Nothing has changed. Jesus has still not returned and God is still looking for volunteers. There is still kingdom work to do, and he still enlists men and women to carry out his will.

Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts... Hebrews 3:15
