Why we Worship

PSALM 47

Clap your hands, all peoples!
  Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
  a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
  and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
  the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout,
  the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
  Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
  sing praises with a psalm!

Why Sing?

God reigns over the nations;
  God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
  as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
  he is highly exalted!

Purpose: | God fights for us. He is the field general, and deploys forces on our behalf to win battles for us. We in turn, fight with the help of the Spirit in us to defeat the enemy within, and in so doing obtain a crown of life.

Commentary: |

To be a blood-bought child of God, and to stay one, inheriting eternal life, is a battle of unseen forces. Peter tells us (1 Peter 2:11) that sinful desires are even now waging war against our souls.  Jesus warned us that desires for things other than God himself would come in and choke the Word if we were not on guard. (Mark 4:19)  Paul at the end of his life was confident that he had fought the good fight and prevailed, excited to exit this world and to enter the next.  What was he looking forward to. "Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day - and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing."  2 Timothy 4:8
