Why we Worship

PSALM 47

Clap your hands, all peoples!
  Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
  a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
  and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
  the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout,
  the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
  Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
  sing praises with a psalm!

Why Sing?

God reigns over the nations;
  God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
  as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
  he is highly exalted!

Purpose: | God is God and we are not. If we get this right, we are well on our way to living lives of joy and peace and satisfatction. When the clay asserts itself, trouble is right around the corner.

Commentary: |

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? Psalm 8:3-4

As humans, pride is the gasoline that we naturally run on, and we forget that the substance we are made of is dirt. We are clay, made gloroiusly in God's image. And when we look to our Maker, the Potter, our identity is secure in how he has made us. We can stop striving and fretting, and relax that we were made for a purpose that God will fulfill in his own time and way.
