Why we Worship

PSALM 47

Clap your hands, all peoples!
  Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
  a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
  and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
  the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout,
  the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
  Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
  sing praises with a psalm!

Why Sing?

God reigns over the nations;
  God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
  as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
  he is highly exalted!

Purpose: | Physical sleep is wonderful, but spiritual sleep, that's another matter. Drowsiness is not a good thing when it comes to the Christian walk. What does being wide awake look like for believers, and how can we stir ourselves out of our slumber?

Commentary: | When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation."  Luke 22:45-46

You remember the story. The evening before the most difficult day any human has had to endure in all of history, Jesus needed his friends to watch and pray with him.  It turned out to be too much to ask. They simply were not up to the task.

Bad things happen when we are asleep spiritually. We can be sleepwalking and not even know it. Jesus knew that the wait for his return would be a long one, and warned that we stay prepared. Even now, the Spirit is stirring the Church.  Let's hear his voice calling us, and be a part of that awakening.
