Why we Worship

PSALM 47

Clap your hands, all peoples!
  Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
  a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
  and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
  the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout,
  the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
  Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
  sing praises with a psalm!

Why Sing?

God reigns over the nations;
  God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
  as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
  he is highly exalted!

Wrath and Mercy

Purpose: | We like thinking of God as merciful. We are very uncomfortable thinking of him being wrathful, of calling us to account for sin and rebellion. But as it turns out, God's justice is a combination of both mercy and wrath.

Commentary: | For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven
against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of
men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness....
                                    Romans 1:18

"God is the only comfort, He is also the supreme terror: the thing we most need and the thing we most want to hide from. He is our only possible ally, and we have made ourselves His enemies."

"Some talk as if meeting the gaze of absolute goodness would be fun. They need to think again. They are still only playing with religion. Goodness is either the great safety or the great danger--according the way you react to it. And we have reacted the wrong way." C. S. Lewis

John McArthur says that "you'll never understand how great God's love is unless you know how great His hate is. I mean, if you understand that God hates sin so profoundly then you will find it all the more amazing that He can love sinners."

"So that without an understanding of His hate, His love is crippled too in our thinking. Love and grace are favorite terms, but they are void of meaning if God does not hate."

A coin has two sides to it, and both together complete the coin. So it is with wrath and mercy. The two together combine to display God’s justice, and round out the picture, so that his character is not diminished.
